While I did find plenty to choose from, there was one I wanted in particular but it was above my budget. When discussing the issue with my DH, he offered to cover the difference on the two machines I decided I would like to have at home to use. The machine I chose was the Hewlett Packard OfficeJet Pro L7680. The machine offers so much more than my previous HP Officejet T45 but then again the previous machine was some 10 to 15 years old too., built long before the days of home networking and the need to use a single printer from one location.

The OJP L7680 offers fax capabilities, printing, scanning, copying, and all of these items are available in both color, black and white, and grayscale, which is another word for economy printing to save ink. The machine offers an option to set it up without the use of a computer. One can actually use it without a computer although one would miss some nifty tricks it can do without one.

It was essential to replace the former machine for the simple fact that the scanner had a line in it from what I gather is use through the years despite numerous cleaning. The fax board refused to work, and the unit began to jam more frequently than usual. Again, I cannot complain because the T45 gave me many years of loyal service. Now, I am on to the next generation of printers that can do almost everything but write the work for you although this machine does keep an internal log of all fax calls in and out, printing jobs, and ink usage so one always knows when it is time to begin purchasing new ink.

The OfficeJet Pro was a bit more difficult to setup than any predecessor I owned but I am sure it is due to the optional features. in order to use the printer on the network, one can purchase a USB cable to plug into the printer and the primary computer or simply use the Ethernet cat 5 cable to plug into the router making this machine its own print server. I chose the latter as my choice of installation.

The greatest surprise so far came when I needed to print a dual-sided paper. The paper had bends in it from shipping and while I straightened it out as best I could, it still jammed but not before printing both sides making the copy appear better than the original packing slip - paper jam and all!

Color on this machine is amazing, which is no surprise given the fact it can accept approximately four various memory cards from digital cameras and camcorders. It prints photographs as well as many photo labs although one has to consider the cost of photo paper these days. It was my hope that photo paper would go down in price but instead, the prices seem to rise to disproportional heights.

The only downside, if can say this is truly a downside is that the machine requires six cartridges. The top takes two cartridges containing two colors in each, which I presume is for the scanner section. The bottom section requires four cartridges, each in different colors using black, magenta, cyan, and yellow. The price of replacement cartridges are not as expensive as other models but with the additional cost of two more cartridges in along with the four in the printer section, I have a feeling this might become a bit more costly than I hoped. The ink prices I found so far lean toward $17.99 to $14.99 through 123inkjets.com.

This particular machine cost approximately $451 with taxes but without the warranty replacement fees or additional warranties. All it all, it was a decent price for everything the machine can do. After working with it the last week or so, I find myself thoroughly pleased with the product’s performance.

It masters over other printers, even multifunctions, when it comes to style as well. The machine is black with white sides. The button areas have chrome-like colors and an LCD screen that allows one to set the machine parameters without the use of a computer.

The unit has a bottom tray that dispenses printer paper for regular print jobs. The top has a flat-bed and an auto-feed chute for paper copying, scanning, and faxing. The auto duplexer comes in extremely handy, as mentioned above. The days of going back to the printer to flip a page and hope it prints evenly on the second side are gone as this baby can do that all by itself. The fax machine section offers options for those with signal ring, formerly known as ringmaster. Signal ring allows the homeowner or phone-owner to setup mutiple phone numbers on one voice line. We have a family number, children’s number, and a fax number. Granted, one cannot speak on the phone except one party at a time but the machine does allow us to set the specific rings for the fax machine to pick up the call. The voice line for the parents has a single ring, ring, ring, ring pattern whereas the children’s line has a double ring-ring, ring-ring sound. The fax line has a triple ring that sounds like ring-ring-ring, ring-ring-ring. The fax section allows the user to set the number of rings before picking up the call. The fax does not load as a normal fax machine either. It loads with the paper with writing on it facing upwards instead of downward, which is most likely due to the fact it uses the flat-bed scanner to copy the document before phoning the fax party and sending the fax. If the party on the other line has color receiving capability then one can send and receive in color!

The OfficeJet Pro has an accessory paper tray that holds even more inkjet paper. If memory serves me correctly, the tray for this machine holds an additional 500 sheets in addition to what goes into the lower tray now. Unfortunately, the additional tray is not a part of the initial purchase but is available at Hewlett Packard for around $99. I am seriously debating on buying this extra paper tray to prevent running out of paper during large print jobs such as those that occur when I am printing my manuscripts.

The additional tray sits beneath the original machine much in the manner of a riser of sorts. The great thing about the paper catch tray, which I hopes continues to work when adding the new paper tray. It has a section that slides out from the upper section above the original purchase tray that collects printed projects. The slide-out piece lifts a lip-type plastic device to prevent the paper from shooting straight out of the machine.

One more thing about the pros to this machine, it has indented handles on each side for carrying it safely as possible from one area to another but with the weight of the machine, I cannot expect anyone would move it about often. Additionally, the printer will self-align, calibrate the inkheads, and clean the inkheads s well.

I cannot claim that this machine is all roses, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. It does have a few faults but they are ones I can easily live with when considering the other aspects. While printing, scanning, and copying, the unit is louder than most units I had demo time playing around with while in the store; however, none of the other machines offered the extras that are available on this machine.

The loud printing sound and the fact the printer uses not two but six printer cartridges is another downside. Again, this is something easy to live with considering all the bells and whistles.

Please view a few pictures of the machine below:

OfficeJet Pro L7680 Front at angle and another of front with view of trays and console menu.
The top section above the button console lifts to reveal a flatbed scanner with the uppermost curved tray allows for self-feeding documents to copy, scan, and fax in addition to dual-sided auto-duplexer printing. The four cartridges fit into the little doorway to the left-hand side beneath the button console when viewing in this angle. The second set are in the top area behind the buttons.

Hewlett Packard OfficeJet Pro L7680 view from side showing handle and from back paper-jam removal area.
Notice the tray that holds the paper. The tray top covering the paper tray has a sliding case that opens to prevent paper from shooting out of the printer possibly ruining it. The button console panel offers various setup buttons to set the machine, align cartridges, clean heads, and print test pages among other things.
The back plug holes on the left-side facing the back contain slots for the USB cable to printer slot, input RJ6 telephone jack and output RJ6 jack to allow fax machine to function through telephone with caller-id and/or answering machine with telephone.

TheHewlett Packard OfficeJet Pro L7680 is a nice model with plenty of features. The multiple extra features makes the somewhat loud printing features completely worth it in the end . I hope this machine is as durable as my previous Hewlett Packard Multifunction Printer (OfficeJet T45). If so, it will last a good long while before becoming necessary to replace this machine.

Until Next Time….

© Paisley Place Creations

Yes I am a citizen. Yes I do vote. Yes I do advocate in grassroots efforts and stay in contact with my federal and state representatives in congress.

Today I received an annoying letter in the mail from my doctor. It is not my doctor’s fault. He is one of the sweetest, most knowledgeable men I know who genuinely cares for all his patients and does what he can to ease suffering. This man is one that not only treats the disease, he treats the person. The letter today was a notice about a change in FDA policy regarding certain medications. The FDA, whose salaries we pay, now has determined to treat us like children and basically have told our physicians they are not intelligent enough or knowledgeable enough to write our prescriptions. They have taken control out of the hands of the ones who have the medical degrees, medical licenses, and professional medical experience. This is wrong. Now, in order for a person to get specific medications each patient has to go to the doctor’s office each and every month to pick up the prescription! This takes precious time away from patients who desperately need to see their doctor. It isn’t enough that many people have a difficult enough time paying to see their doctor as it is. The government has pushed their boot a little harder into our necks. Soon we are going to break. This ridiculous requirement is going to cost lives. Unfortunately, the lives it will affect most are those who can afford it the least – the elderly, the chronically ill, and the terminally ill. Already physicians have to limit their time spent with patients in order to get to the next. This will leave even less time available. We are slowly becoming numbers instead of names. Orwell's 1984 is a typo. It's is actually happening now.

While I am not one to harp on my own illnesses, I will mention here that I suffer from systemic lupus erythemosus, degenerative joint disease, ulnar neuropathy, and am legally blind from retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative genetic eye disease. None of these illnesses have a cure, not even the eye disease. Life is difficult and as the diseases worsen, I learn to live with the symptoms as best I can. My days go from bad to worse sometimes but I keep plugging along just as many others in the same situation. For someone like me, this new law hurts twofold. One, it is difficult enough to pay for the doctor visits but it is even more difficult to get transportation. I live in “Mayberry Incarnate” and unfortunately there is no public transportation here so I have to rely on the kindness of friends and family to get me to and from the doctor. The pharmacy I use delivers my medication even though my home is located outside of their delivery area but it eases one burden and I am grateful for their kindness. My heart shudders when I think of how I would get my medication if it were not for them. Many of the medications I take are on the list of medicines included in the letter requiring a trip to the office to get each and every prescription every month. The pain, fatigue, and depression of living like this is difficult enough. Why add insult to injury?

The medical care in this country is unbelievable. What annoys me most is how so many people sit around with their thumbs up their butts with a stupid look on their faces when they can’t seem to understand what problems the health care industry has. Well, for starters, it is too damned expensive. Everything from medical care to hospitalization to medication is too damned expensive. It is time citizens run lobbyists for the pharmaceutical companies out on a rail. This pay off to rob our citizens of their hard-earned money has to stop. Statistics show that drugs in the United States are anywhere from 50% to 300% higher than drugs in other countries even when manufactured by the exact same companies that supply drugs to our country. What is wrong with this picture? Several years ago, I did some research on a drug called Depo-Provera. It is a birth control injection medication that is given every 13 weeks to prevent pregnancy. This drug cost $69 here in the United States. It was only $14.50 abroad. A personal source in the dental business told me that dentures - yes the false teeth - are marked up by dentists over 3000%! A $5000 pair of dentures only cost around $20 to actually make. What is wrong here? Granted there is nothing wrong with making money or even making lots of money but honestly folks, who cannot live and live comfortably on a couple million dollars a year? The rest of the country does quite well living on $40,000 to $50,000 a year. What makes the CEOs of these companies so damned special? Why are our congressmen allowed to vote on their personal salary raises? Why don’t we the people vote to decide if they need a salary increase? I know why. It’s because they know damned well they wouldn’t get a raise because they have done nothing to deserve one. In the beginning, government officials who were voted into office did not receive a salary. The salary is what makes them forget that they work for us, not the lobbyists or the pharmaceuticals or big business. It is time they realize we are the people, not big business. We are who pays the bulk of this country’s bills. The shrub-man needs to remember exactly who it is funding his little war game too. That money alone could pay for national health care.

The reason medical is so expensive in this country is mainly due to people having to choose between housing, food, and maintenance medication that literally is the difference between life and death for many. In the years I spent working as a medical transcriptionist, I discovered that many people, elderly and disabled mostly, end up in the emergency room because they cannot afford the medication that keeps them alive. They go so long without taking their medication because what little money they get has to go on food and a place to live. Once the hospitals get their medication back to the correct levels, they go home to start the process all over again. Furthermore, many days of work and school are lost each and every year because people cannot afford to go to the doctor and get the necessary medication. A national healthcare plan would reduce hospital stays and reduce emergency room visits. People would lose less work because they are able to see a doctor and with maintenance programs, childhood illness would not be as bad because early treatment is the key.

Many say that we live in a country with the best technologically advanced health care system in the world. Well I say what good is having all this medical technology and advancement when less than 1% of the population can afford it. It is like having food all around a starving man but the food is locked up behind bars simply out of reach. I would much rather have less advanced care and treat more people than have the best care and treat less than 1% of the population. Charity begins at home and

It is high time the United States gets its nose out of everyone else’s business. We need to clean up our own backyard before heading in to clean up those of others. Iraq is a prime example of the United States being where it has no business. The Iraqi people, contrary to the lies the administration of shrub says, do not want our help, our torture, or our religion. Leave them alone. How would “we the people” like it if another country with entirely different beliefs decided we needed saving? The invasion of Iraq was wrong. It was done without provocation. Shrubman are you listening? Saddam Hussein did NOT attack the United States. It was Osama Bin Laden! The money poured into terrorizing the Iraqi people would be better spent on healthcare here in the United States. I’m sure the Iraqis would appreciate it too. I know I would.

Stepping off the Soapbox....

Don't blame me, I voted for Kerry!
© Paisley Place Creations

The Dog-O-Matic is born!

You know you are thinking entirely too much or are entirely too creative for your own good when a simple post to an email group of friends regarding guide dogs ends up bringing crazy thoughts into your head of a new dog bathing system. Maybe it comes from sitting up too late at night hearing those infomercials until all hours of the night. Boy they get on everyone’s nerves don’t they? Somehow, the infomercials stick in your head like an advertising jingle. It brings thoughts of Benjamin Bratt in the movie Demolition Man singing I wish “I was an Oscar Myer Weiner.” Anyhow, you know what I mean. The infomercials stick in our heads because they are all the same; the companies simply change products. The wording is almost identical. After a quick discussion of the Kenmore 3T HE front-loader washer and dryer unit, I began thinking about how nice it would be to have a similar machine for dog washing. Picture a Kenmore HE machine. Now picture the machine with a place for the dog’s head to protrude out the front with a little door and a ramp for entering and exiting. Now you have the Dog-O-Matic!

Disclaimer: The dog-o-matic described and advertised here is not a real object. It is, simply put, a widget. A widget is an accounting term for a generic item that does not exist. Many times in college business programs students have to create a business plan or in the case of accounting, students keep the books on a non-existent company that produces a non-existent product called a widget. The dog-o-matic is a widget; it does not exist so please do not try placing an order for one. It is just a figment of my imagination. However, if someone can find a way to make this idea work and make a profit, I will be more than happy to share credit, fame, and fortune. :)

Now onto my inspirational but nonexistent Dog-O-Matic Net-mercial.

The Dog-o-matic:

Don't have a dingy doggie. There are many levels of child abuse but regardless of how it happens, it affects every aspect of life including future relationships. Abused children grow up lacking self-worth, self-confidence, and do not easily trust others. It is a horrid cycle that can be broken if stopped early enough.

Alcoholism and drug abuse are the leading causes of child abuse. Abusers are not limited to any social class, race, ethnic background, or religion. Abusers are in all walks of life and all financial classes. Abuse eats away at the family unit until nothing is left except for resentment, pain, and sometimes even death.

Today there are all sorts of programs available to provide help. Battered women’s shelters can provide emergency shelter. Alcoholic anonymous is available to help alcoholics beat the disease of alcoholism. ALCOA is a group to help adult children of alcoholics. There are groups for spouses of alcoholics. The justice system offers restraining orders, criminal charges, emergency custody orders, etc…. The realm of help is unending. The department of social services offers many programs for those who are abused. Help is even available for elder abuse, which is becoming a growing problem in this country. This kind of help was not available thirty-plus years ago when I was growing up in the hell of child abuse. We ran when we could and took the beatings and verbal abuse when we were unable to leave. In today’s time, there is no reason for staying with an abuser.

One of the saddest things about growing up in an abusive home is that it perpetuates the problem. Children of abuse have a much higher chance of growing up only to become abusers themselves. I consider myself fortunate to have broken the cycle of abuse in my lifetime through the aid of groups such as ALCOA and intensive therapy. However, even leaving the abusive person and getting treatment will not remove the scars of the past. It has been many years since my personal experiences of abuse suffered at the hands of my very on father. To this day, I still have flashbacks and difficulty moving beyond the abuse. Close relationships require hard work on my part. Controlling anger is a constant battle. The tendency to strike out remains ever-present, just under the skin if you will.

If you or anyone you know is in an abusive relationship, offer help. Get the person to someone who can help. Contact your local DSS office, sheriff’s office, or police department for options. Abuse is everyone’s problem. Nobody has to live this way. Children can always tell their teachers, principal, or guidance counselor. This cycle has to stop somewhere. The sooner it stops, the better it is for everyone involved. Seek help. Do what must be done to ensure no child or spouse is ever abused again. Speaking out is the only way to stop it. Even power companies and postal workers are safe persons to speak to now.

Speaking out about abuse is the right thing to do. It is everyone’s responsibility to make this world safe for all. It only takes one person to stop a cycle of abuse. Do your part and save a person who is being abused. You will be glad you did and so will I. Abuse has gone on for far too long. It is time for abuse to become a thing of the past. It needs to be abolished.
© Paisley Place Creations

A utopian style society sounds like a grand design yet man will never live to see the day he lives in such a manner. As people, we are barbaric and harsh. The days of the inquisition and crusades are all over. However, even living in a day such as this we, as a race, still manage to find ourselves in some type of war. War is an evil thing. It festers away like a sore until it ruins the body with infection and gangrene leaving only mutilation and death in its wake. In a time when we are the most enlightened and intelligent in history, we still manage to screw up a good thing. It is high time we as a combined force stop allowing those that only wish to pamper their egos for the simple fact they can. It is time people see the war for what it is, men and women being maimed and killed while maiming and killing. Stop the war now. How can we teach our children that fighting is not the answer when the highest official in the United States wages war against those who happen to not believe as he does? The quick and short of it is: We can’t.
© Paisley Place Creations

You know the one. Out of sheer exhaustion and desperation, Mom utters the famous words, “I hope one day you have a child just like you so you will have some idea of what you put me through.” It is as clear today as it was the first time she said it.

Some eight years ago, the mother’s curse came to plague me. It actually began much earlier, the usual nine months, but not many consider this time a time of aggravation from the mom’s-curse-factor. I disagree. All those months I carried this little one in my tummy I knew she was to be the one who grew up as I did – my mother’s curse. The constant kicks and jabs in all the wrong places at all the wrong times haunt my memories.

These days, my adorable 8-year-old pushes the envelope. She is the never-ending night owl – like mother, like daughter. The morning ritualistic argument begins the minute I drag her backside from bed after working so vehemently to drag my own out of bed. “But why do I have to go to school this early?” “I don’t want to get up; I need my sleep.” “Mommy, go away.” These are but a few of the quick quips I hear every day. The eldest child tries desperately to help. She is up almost two full hours before anyone else. Her treatment is much worse than my own since little sis’ knows she can get away with harsher language. Granted it is along the lines of, “Leave me alone or I’ll sic my stuffed bunny on you.” Still, it is but one of the familiar threats I can remember using all those years ago.

Consolation is near, however. Tomorrow is Saturday. Everyone can sleep in tomorrow. The strange thing is that the disagreeable little one will be up with the birds to watch morning cartoons without argument or alarm. Strange how that works isn’t it?

Familial curses and cantankerous pre-teens…. So much changing around the globe yet so much remains the same. It’s a strange, strange, strange, strange world.
© Paisley Place Creations
